Analysis of music video genres

Drake - Over

Music videos engage the audience by using a different ranges of lighting and colours, camera angles, editing techniques, narratives, concepts, performances. Also special effects and editing techniques are used in order to capture the audiences attention and help to follow the concept, narrative or performance of the music video.

 Cinematography

In the music video Drake - Over, camera angles are used to show and portray drake in a strong and powerful light. A low angle shot
is used at the beginning of the music video, this is to straight away tell the audience that drake is someone to look up to, and it creates a sense of importance which gives drake the rap artist image of being wealthy and intimidating. This is stereotypical of a rap genre music video as the camera angles are constantly changed throughout the music video to benefit the artist image and representation, but the low angle is a frequently used  camera
angle, and is used throughout drakes music video over, mainly on the scenes when he is sitting on the bed.

Also in the music video over by drake, a frequently used camera angle is the long shot. A long shot is used to show the artist and the surroundings. In this long shot drake is standing with he's back to the other people and the only he is the only person we can see clearly. This makes the audience feel like drake is different from the rest and has found a way to get out of just being one of the crowd. Also in the long shots drake changes he's outfits this is to show off he's style and he becomes and idol not just for singing, but for he's dress sense as well. This will lead to drakes fans buying the same cloths and copying him as they see him as a role model.

Editing

Also in Drakes music video 'over' montage editing is used to show drakes pain, anger and frustration about who the song is targeted towards. As the audience we believe it is about a female in he's life who hurt him. The montage editing starts just before drake says  "nobody's ever done it like i did it" and finishes when he comes back to the chorus. The montage editing is used to highlight the speed that drake is rapping, and it also links to the emotions he is feeling and that they are building up inside him. This helps the audience to be able to understand how strong drake feelings must have been for this person who he is singing about.  Therefore the editing technique engages the audience to the music video and improves their understanding of drakes thoughts and feelings. Overall expressing drakes anger and emotion more effectively through to use of editing.

Green screen is a major part of the editing used in drakes video over. A shot that is repetitively shown is a shot of drake on he's bed and a fast city life being played around he's bedroom walls. This is to show the audience how difficult drakes busy lifestyle is an showing that it is a headache and also portraying how hard it is to keep up. This makes the audience get an understand of drakes frustration and how a music stars lifestyle can be very stressful and therefore hard to find time for personal lifestyle, which links in with the meaning of the song. Drake being caught up in a extremely busy lifestyle has lead to a break up in a relationship that he has had.

Mise en scene

The mise en scene encompasses the setting/locations, lighting, the costumes, iconography, facial expressions and body language, the positioning of characters are all the things that make a music video successful.
During the music video by drake - over. He regularly changes costume and wears jewellery which represents he's fame and wealth, this is stereotypically to the rap genre as rap artists are know for having 'bling' and conveys an image to the audience of drake lifestyle being orientated around the stereotypical rapper lifestyle.
The lighting of the video is constantly quite low key lighting, this creates a dark and gloomy atmosphere for the music video which represents and expresses drakes emotions. The low key lighting helps to portray the artists anger and frustration. This is because the low key lighting represents depression and deep thinking. Therefore the low key lighting helps the audience to understand the meanings behind the song, and therefore can build up a relationship with the artist.
The iconography during drakes music video, are the Lamps around the bedroom. The lamps create a sense of realism and help to create the mood of depression and construct the low key lighting within the bedroom. The audience can relate to the artist by having an understanding of how he is stuck in he's bedroom with just the lamps on. Therefore the iconography effectively makes the music video and the artist relatable, this is because a lamp is a normal and an item that the majority of the audience would also have in their bedroom.
The location within the music video is mainly set in the bedroom, other than the bedroom the music video is filmed on a green screen. This suggests to the audience that the artist is mainly located in he's bedroom. This symbolises  depressions and over thinking thoughts. Therefore the audience can get a clearer understanding of how the artist is becoming overwhelmed by he's lifestyle, and can therefore lead to the audience building up a relationship with the artist.
The facial expresión and body language of drake is quite slouched, this represents the artist as being tired. The audience can then get an understanding that the artist may be stressed due to the music industry lifestyle and this is leading to he's tiredness.

Justin Bieber - What do you mean
pop genre

Cinematography
During the music video What do you mean- Justin Bieber which is in the pop genre. Different camera angles are used in order to benefit the artists image and show different emotions and to help the audience build a relationship with the artist himself.
Firstly in the video there is a various amount of close ups on Justin Bieber through out the music video, these are so the audience can easily build a relationship with the artist. In this close up on the right, because the artist is not making eye contact with the camera, this is showing the artists confusion, which leads to making it easy for the audience to understand he's emotions and meaning of the song. This is part of one of goodwins theory for the visual to match the lyrics, it is important for music videos to follow goodwins theory in order to succeed.

Also long shots are used in the music video to show the artist singing and dancing with a group of people in a skate park. This is conventional to the pop genre as dancing along to the song is a stereotypical representation of a pop genre music video. The target audience is between 16-25 which is the age that people start to go to parties, therefore having a long shot showing a partying lifestyle makes it easier for the audience to relate to Justin Bieber's lifestyle because the audience party themselves therefore have something in common with the video. Overall making the video more fun and enjoyable to watch for the audience.

Editing

Slow paced editing is used to convey the theme of arguing with your partner. The slow pace editing shows that arguments can last a long time and be difficult to resolve. This relates to the artist words of "what do you mean" as he is confused of why she may be annoyed. For the audience the slow pace editing highlights the artists emotions and makes it easier to relate to him and therefore build up a relationship and overall make the music video clearer to understand.

Another editing technique used is a reaction shot when Justin Bieber and the girl jump off the roof and get away from the bad guys and survive, the girl shows a surprised and relived face expression which the audience can understand and relate to. It also creates an image for the artist as being a hero and and setting an idolising image for himself to all of boys. This is because he saved the girl from the bad guys without getting anyone hurt. Therefore this technique helps the artist gain a heroic image that the audience will then look up to as a role model.

Mes-en-scene
costume
lighting
poistion
facial expression
iconography Mea-En-Scene used in this music video is costume, The artist is in a white top which portrays innocence, and the girl is in red and black which portrays danger. This conveys a theme that the artist could be getting himself in trouble going with the girl. The audience can relate to this as the target audience is of a similar age which have similar circumstances in their own life. The artist is later wearing a black hoodie but this is to show to the audience he's fashion and outfit for the party in the music video, it also expresses he's dress sense and young party lifestyle he has, which the audience can gain a better understanding of by the cloths he wears and the colours he's chooses.
Another aspect of mes en scene involved in the music video 'what do you mean' is the lighting. At the beginning of the music video the lighting is low key and dark, this portrays to the audience that the artist may be in trouble. Throughout the music video the lighting begins to get high key. This changes the mood of the song and creates a happy and good ending of the music video.
Thirdly the positioning of characters is above the rest of the characters involved in the party part of the music video. This is to highlight the artists importance and fame. The audience can then build up a relationship with the artist by seeing how important and loved he is.
The facial expressions and body language are another key element of the mes en scene involved in this music video. The artist is constantly showing he's energy and enthusiasm through he's body language. The audience can then gain an understanding of how the artist lifestyle is involved in partying and the typical 18-25 year old sort of lifestyle. Overall making the artist more relatable to the audience.
Finally the last aspect of mes en scene is the iconography, there is a small use of iconography throughout out this music video. In the final scene when the artist is in the skate park having a party. The iconography is the skateboard, this represents the artist as being cool. The audience can then see the artist as a role model and idolise them.

Adele - Someone Like you
soul genre

Cinematography

Cinematography is used with mainly close ups to portray the artist thought and feelings and to show her emotion. The close ups show how to artist has been hurt by a previous person in their life. The audience can relate to her by the close ups showing the pain in her eyes and making eye contact with the camera engages the audience to understand that the artist is looking for happiness but is stuck in a dark place right now. Overall having close ups helps to build a relationship with the audience and convey the themes unhappiness and loneliness.

Another camera angle used is a long shot of an empty pathway, This suggests that the artist has no clear pathway she wants to go in life. Also because the pathway has no one else on it suggests that the artist is alone in her life and has no hope of finding anyone special. This means that the audience begin to get an understanding that Adele is quite depressed due to her life being without someone who she needs and wants in her life, it also conveys a theme of not knowing where to go. This is understood by the long shot not having a pathway that seems to go on for ever into darkness. Overall being conventional to the soul genre as soul is known for having quite sad and unpleasant meaning within there music.

Editing

The main edit used through out the whole music video is the filter being black and white. This edit suggests that the white shows the innocent being adele, and the black represents dark and gloomy. Together this suggest that Adele is innocent stuck is a dark place with no way out. The audience can get an understanding from the lyrics 'someone like you' that the artist has lost someone she can never replace and therefore is going to suffer for a long time. By using this editing technique it helps the audience understand what the lyrics mean and if they are sad or happy. In this case the lyrics are clearly shown to be sad.

The only other editing technique used is the slow pace editing which is used to show how the feeling and emotions will be stuck with the artist for a long time. This helps the audience get a clearer understanding of what the artist is going through. It also builds up the relationship between the artist and audience because the slow pace assists in the lyrics making more sense and more meaning. Which therefore makes the music video more successful as the audience are able to get a meaningful and deep understanding into what the message of the song is.

Mes-en-scene

The mes-en-scene is important in this music video especially the location. As you can see by the screenshot it is set in paris that is known for the romantic love city, however the city is empty. This conveys an image of the artist being lonely depressed and the lose of someone very special to her. The location allows the audience to get an understanding that it is a location that should be packed with people but there is no one, which is conventional to the soul genre as the genre is known for portraying sad and emotional themes, as the audience cans see within this music video. Another aspect of the mes en scene used in this music video is the lighting. Throughout this music video the lighting is constantly low key. This shows to the audience that the artist is depressed and down, this leads to the audience wanting to find out why the artist is in this state. Therefore makes the audience want to get a further understanding of what the artist is about. Thirdly the costume of the artist is, dressed in black. This is also represents the artist as insecure and and isolated, therefore the audience can further there understanding of how much depression the artist is feeling. This will lead to the audience building up a relationship with the artist and gaining more respect and consideration for the artist herself. The facial expression and body language also help to build up this image of the artist being depressed. The facial expressions are seen clearly through the close ups used. The facial expression are dramatically sad and painful which makes the audience feel sympathetic towards the artist and build up this relationship of wondering why the artist is so down and hurt. Finally the last aspect of mes en scene within this music video is the iconography, there is minimal use of iconography and is therefore not essential in this music video. The main use of mes en scene in this music video was to display and represent depression.

In conclusion analysing music video genres has benefited me in what music video genre I would like to choose when i film my music video. From this analysis I think the easiest video to create would be the soul genre music video. This is because it is clearly more effective and emotional which are created through the use of certain aspects of the mes en scene which would be easy to construct in my own music video.

  1. This post demonstrates some understanding of how micro elements are used within your chosen three music genres. You have identified different examples, to support the points that you have made on the implied messages, but you need to ensure that your analysis is consistent throughout.

    Aim-
    1) Ensure that you have related all your points back to the conventions of the music genre
    2) Ensure that all mise-en-scene points are included
    3) Watch SPAG
    4) Focus on the relationship that is created between the artist and the audience
    5) Include a conclusion
