Applying for music copyright - Miss Georgiou

Applying for music copyright

Introduction

In the copyright law, there is a concept of fair use, this is also referred to as; free use, fair dealing or fair practise. Copyright basically is set out to stop other people copying any other artists work. If they was to copy there would be a punishment usually a fine. For example Pharrell Williams had to pay a fine of $7.4 million for the song blurred lines as it was very similar to another song by Marvin Gaye.

Applying for copyright

The reason for having to apply for copyright os because it is not our work, the song does not belong to us, therefore we have to ask for permission to use the song otherwise we would be breaking the laws of copyright. The song our group have chosen is hometown glory by Adele, we had to find the record label and email the company XL recordings because that is the record label adele is signed to, we then had to form a email to ask permission of using her song in our media product. This is because if we put it on youtube without asking, they could remove it as that would be going against the law of copyright. We have only just sent the email so are therefore waiting for a response from XL recordings.

Unfortunately after applying for the copyright of our song, we did not receive a reply from XL recordings. We are going to send another email requesting for use of the song in hope that they will reply this time.
