Risk Assessment - Miss Miller

Risk Assessment
The purpose of creating and having a risk assessment is to identify the possible risks that may injure the team when filming. By identifying the risks I can come up with solutions to lower the chance of the risk actually happen. Therefore by coming up with not just one but two ways to ensure the risk does not occur. I am preventing the group from being in danger or getting hurt when filming, which is important for all our health. I identified six risks that could occur when filming at our chosen locations these are: rain getting on them camera, falling of the stage, getting lost in London, moving the piano, filming in the dark and trailing leads. These are all the possible risks that could occur when we film out music video.

Our risk assessment was stuck to and helped sufficiently in ensuring everybody's health and safety. We followed our risk assessment through out filming especially when we filmed in the hall. The trailing leads of the microphone were wrapped around the microphone stand so that the leads were out of the way and out of any danger. The risk of falling off the stage was prevented by each member watching out for each other, when they were near the edge of the stage. For example I was told a few times to be careful as I was near the edge. This was effectively making me aware of how close I was to the edge and stopped me from getting any closer and falling off.  We did not encounter any further risks when filming, this shows that we planned our risk assessment sufficiently and carefully. Overall the risk assessment raised everyones awareness in the group of the possible risks that could happen, and therefore prevented them when we came to film, as we was all aware and more careful in everything we did when filming.

Filming schedule - Miss Miller

Filming Schedule

Filming schedule is important to have so that each day of filming is as efficient as it can be. With the filming schedule we have numbed the shots that we will do in order (e.g 1,2,3,4,5...), we also set out the date and time so it is clear to every group member what day and time we should meet. This leads to less confusion and making more use of the small time scale that we have to film. We also state the location that we will be filming each shot, identify the location, shows to the group where to meet. The next section is content/action this part is constructed to make the group aware of what we are planning on filming, which scene or shots we want to get done in that day. The next box is the shot type and duration, this is essential to plan so that we don't forget our ideas on what we thought would be effective in incising the target audience. The next box is costume/hair/makeup This box is mainly aimed at our artist, Amy. So that she knows what to wear on each day, this is because we have included three different outfits through out our music video. The next box is iconography this box will asset the group in getting the correct iconography for the correct day of filming. Personnel basically outlines who is being filmed, as you can see the majority of the days it is all Amy which we can rely on. The one day we need friends included in the shot, we have to ensure they are all free and available, which will be planned in advance. Finally the last box is equipment which reminds the group what equipment we need on each day that we film. Overall the filming schedule is very important to have so that each and every day of filming is clear to the group on everything we need and when and where to meet. This means that we will have no confusion and effectively good filming days from good preparation.

In conclusion the filming schedule was very useful. We didn't actually follow the order, but that has been down to the group having difficulties in meeting, the availability of the hall in school or the weather. But the order of the filming schedule is not to important as long as we have the other boxes of information, which aided us of what we need on each location. For example numbers 7,8,9 is when we planned to film a city location, due to having the cameras early and while we was off school, the group filmed this scene first, so the dates on the filming schedule are incorrect as these scenes were filmed earlier than the 29th. This benefited the group as this gave the group footage to start editing while we waited for the availability of the rooms in school, for example the hall and music rooms.
The hall and music room scenes when the artist is either playing the piano or performing, we filmed extra shots.  This is because we thought as a group that we would rather have more to edit, rather than not enough. Therefore filming extra shots gave us security in for filling the whole four minutes of the song. Overall the information that is essential in this filming schedule has been used each time we filmed, the only issue with the filming schedule was the dates we planned, but this had no impact on the filming as we just re arranged and filmed exactly what we planned.

Music video inspiration - miss miller

Music video inspiration

I am going to analyse three music videos and pull out three aspects that have inspired me and could possibly use in my own music video. I will be focusing on: micro elements, music video style, artist representation, music video genres, theory, choice of song and more. The three music videos i am going to use will be music videos that i have already looked at before in previous posts. The music videos are: Tears dry on their own- Amy Winehouse,

Tears dry on their own - Amy Winehouse

During this music video of Tears dry on their own, The artist walks down a busy high road, but she walks like no one else is there. The audience can see this by the way Amy doesn't look at anyone and sometimes bumps into people because she is unaware that they was there. This is conventional to the soul music genre as it highlights the theme of isolation. As in many soul genre music video the artist is usually alone and portrays how they need no one. The way Amy is around the public but does not interact with anyone suggests to the audience that she does not need or want to speak to anyone. Therefore is on her own and emphasis the concept of isolation. This has inspired me to use this in my music video, because we have planned to film
part of the music video in the busy city of London. Therefore when we film the London shots it will be conventional to the soul genre if she copies the way Amy Winehouse walks down this high street. oblivious to everyone around her

.Someone like you - Adele

During the music video someone like you, by Adele. The editing style used through out the whole music video is a black and white filter. The filter represented how the artist is reflecting on her past. This helps the audience to understand the song and the artists emotions. Therefore I am going to plan on incorporating a black and white filter on my music video, because it is conventional and effective in capturing the audiences attention and incising them into the music video. The black and white filter has inspired me to use it within mine, because throughout my music video the artist is reflecting on the past, very similar to how this music video is using the black and white filter.

Only love can hurt like this - Paloma Faith

During the music video 'Only love can hurt like this' by Paloma Faith. The use of close ups are used effectively to convey the artists emotions and feelings.  I was inspired by the close ups in this music video because they were full of realism and clearly showed to the audience how much the song meant to the artist. I think that within my groups music video using close ups, will help to build up a relationship between the artist and the audience. During the song the part where the artist sings 'I just crumble' the close up effectively conveys the artists weakness and insecurities, which are conventional aspects to the soul genre. Therefore I am planning on conveys the same traits in my soul genre music video.

Lay me down - Sam Smith

Throughout the the music video 'Lay me down' by Sam Smith. The use of low key lighting is extremely conventional to the soul genre music videos. It also helps to set the tone of the music video immediately. The low key lighting expresses to the audience the artists emotions and mood to the audience. This allows the audience to build up an understanding of how the lyrics connote a story about something that has happened to the artist previously. I have been inspired by the low key lighting  within Sam Smiths music video, and I plan to use the lighting effect within my groups music video. The use of low key lighting being present in my music video will illustrate to the audience that the mood of the song will be sad and meaningful to the artist.

Adele - hometown glory
(Music video)
During the music video Adele 'hometown glory' I was inspired by the use of cinematography included in the music video. Tracking and panning were so effective in This music video to keep the music video exciting and not boring for the target audience. In my group I will make sure that we use tracking and panning in the scenes that the artist is playing the piano and on stage. This will give the audience all different angles of the artist making the artist more relatable and connectable for the audience. I also believe it keep our music video entertaining and to a professional standard .

storyboards - Miss Miller

Storyboards

The purpose of constructing storyboards for our music video is in order to plan and make sure that the shots we want to include in our music video, are actually possible. The storyboards help us to consider where we should include certain shots within the music video. For example at the chorus part of the song, we have storyboarded the artist to be on stage, in a dress and heels. This is so the audience will be able to see the professional side of our artist, which we think is crucial to include within our music video. Having a storyboard is only a outline of what we are going to include, when we are filming, we may add in other shots that we didn't actually plan on the storyboard.

As a group we all carried out primary and secondary research before constructing the storyboards for our music video. This research included looking at other artists music videos. Obviously due to our group doing an Adele song, an artist we frequently look to is Adele. By watching and analysing Adele's music videos it has inspired us to incorporate shots that may be effective in creating emotion and that are conventional to the soul genre. An example, is Adele song 'someone like you' Within this song a close up shot is frequently used in order to show the audience her feelings and emotions. I thought that this shot would have similar effect on our audience, for our music video. Therefore by watching soul artist music videos as secondary research, it has benefited the group in being able to understand what shots might be a good idea to include. We then used primary research to find out what our audience was looking for in a soul genre music video. As a group we constructed a questionnaire with ten questions about what that would expect and want to see in a soul genre music video. The results have been reflected on when planning the storyboards and have helped us to understand our target audience better.

I personal was inspired by Amy Winehouse and have taken inspiration from the music video 'tears dry on their own' During this music video Amy walked down a busy high street but still looked isolated, as she did not make eye contact with anyone. After being inspired by this shot, I put it forward to the group that we could use a shot in London similar to Amy Winehouse's to show vulnerability and insecurity within the artist.  Which are both stereotypical representations portrayed in soul genre music videos. Another inspiration my group found was the use of the black and white filter. We thought this filter would be effective during the scenes that the artists memories are being shown. To illustrate to the audience that she is reflecting on her past. The black and white filter immediately connotes the past, this helps the audience to understand the music video and how the artist desperately misses her past.

My group and I received blank storyboard sheets, which as you can see: have a box for a small drawing of what the shot should look like, then a box to write down the essentials, such as the location, actors, narrative description and more.  Our group consisting of four members allowed us to each take on board a sheet and start filling parts of the storyboard in. This helped us to use our time effectively in order to finish our storyboards. While constructing the storyboards we all came up with ideas that were discussed and constructed in order to be put down in our story boards. Overall we used nine storyboard sheets between all of us, which totalled to thirty six frames. We thought that this would be enough to have a rough outline of what we want to have included within our music video. The most time consuming part of the constructing the storyboard was the drawings, but we each made sure that the box below was filled in, as the drawing is not the most important. However we did manage to finish our storyboards with the drawings included. We shared responsibilities; at the beginning by having ella do the drawings, and Amy, Hannah and I were giving ideas and filling out the bottom part of the sheet. Then as we began to run out of time,  we each took onboard a sheet each and done everything on the sheet.

Overall we have started to film our music video and have included shots that were planned within our storyboard. But when filming Amy and Ella found a conventional wall in London that the filmed on. This was not planned but the whole storyboard does not have to followed frame for frame. Furthermore by including some shots that we have not planned, it will leave us with more shots that we could use when we begin to edit. This will be beneficial as we will need to incorporate as many shots as we can, so that the music video is not seen as boring.

Planning editing - miss miller

Planning Editing

Before shooting our music video, as a group we planned how and what editing styles we would include. The four editing styles that we have planed to include in our soul genre music video are: fast paced editing, slow timing of shots, overlapping/layering of shots and black and white filters. We thought as a group that these editing styles would be most effective in engaging the audience with the artist emotions, and the songs meanings.

Firstly black and white filters were incorporated in our planning, This is because black and white filters are conventional and stereotypically seen in a soul genre music video. We planned to ensure that our audience  can relate and create a relationship with our artist. Using a black and white filter the audience are able to understand  that the artist is reflecting on her past. This will make it easier for the audience to understand and convey an image of how the artists past is still effecting her massively. The black and white filter also represents the artist as being down in life and emotionally broken this is a stereotypical representation within the soul genre. Having this included in our music video will show to the audience straight away that it is a soul genre music video. The audience will be able to understand how the artist past is missed and how she is now caught up in a lifestyle that she can not escape. This will overall enable my target audience to be able to begin to build up a relationship with the artist and gain a better understanding as to why the artist is depressed. The use of the black and white filters is conventional to the soul genre because it relates to the past, which the artists are usually singing about in the soul genre.

Secondly the editing style we have planned to include is slow timing of shots, this is so that the audience can relate to the artist. The artist becomes more relatable due to her emotions being clearly shown through the slow timing of shots, allowing the audience more time to connect and see more clearly how the artist feels, which leads to the audience being more engaged and involved in the music video. Once the audience see the artist true emotions and feelings they can start to build up a relationship and relate to similar events that have happened to themselves. Overall the slow timing of shots builds up the artist emotions more dramatically so that they are clearer to identify for the audience, which then makes the audience begin to question why the artist is feeling this way. Therefore builds an appeal to the artist as the audience want to find out more about the artist.

We have also planned to use overlapping of shots when the artist is playing the piano, this is to show the artist is reflecting on her life and past. The audience can get an understanding of this when she plays the piano, she begins to reminisce on her memories especially in her childhood. It is conventional to the soul genre as it shows her emotions overlapping the events of her past. Also the overlappingillustrates how her life has become repetitive and constantly the same boring stressful life. The audience can then get a better understanding of how the artist is sad and upset, this is conventional to the soul genre as artists are typically known to be down.

Finally fast paced editing we planned to use in order to show how the artist emotions are building up. We have planed to use This just before the chorus, this is so the pace of the video goes back to normal in order to emphasis how important the chorus is. The audience can get an understanding of how much the music industry life has got on top of the artist and how she is beginning to feel trapped and insecure. The face pace also illustrates to the audience that the artist is begin to become angry, this can lead to the audience beginning to understand how hard her life is. Therefore emphasising how much she misses her hometown.

In conclusion planning editing has helped our group understand what and where to include different editing styles in order to make are music video successful. The group came up with new innovative ideas while planning which I think will work well in our music video. Overall this planning has helped our group improve our range of editing techniques involved in our music video.

lyric analysis - miss miller

Lyric Analysis

The song we choose to create our music video to is Adele 'Hometown glory' therefore the song lyrics we analysed were hometown glory. The purpose in analysing the songs lyrics is so that we can get an understanding of the connotations that the song has. This is sometimes called reading between the lines, which means looking deeper than what the song just says on the surface, and finding the hidden meanings and messages. By finding the deeper meanings behind the song it can help our group in constructing our narrative effectively to relate to how the artist is portraying herself through the lyrics. By having an understanding of what the lyrics mean, as a group we can then plan ahead to incorporate certain aspects into our music video, in order to make the music video understandable and engaging for the audience.

Firstly as a group we colour coded the lyrics for different aspects that we was looking for within the song. We highlighted with yellow where there was hidden meanings or messages. We then highlighted in blue for any lyrics that represented the artist. Orange highlights were to show ideas for mes en scene and style of music video, Finally green which was to show target audience relationship.

Firstly we decided to highlight everything that we thought had a hidden meaning in yellow. The first line was 'Ive been walking in the same way as I did'  This connotes that she has not grown up or changed since a young age. Which therefore tells the audience that she wants to return to her childhood.  Another example of a hidden message is on line three when the lyrics say: 'And tutting my heels and strutting my feet' This portrays that the artist has had struggles and difficulties in her life so far. Therefore from the first to examples we can get an understanding that the hidden message behind the whole song is, that she wants to return to her childhood lifestyle, where she was surrounded  by friends and family. This helps the audience to get an understanding of how the artist feels trapped in the busy lifestyle in the music industry, and how the artist does not get time to return to her family home. Therefore creating a large amount of sympathy for the artist as she is portrayed as lonely and run down, through the use of the hidden messages.

Our annotations will clearly helps us when planning our genres codes and conventions. Our music video is a soul genre music video therefore the first code and convention that we can plan to incorporate into the music video is the insecurity of the artist. Insecurity is conventionally to the soul genre, because artists within the genre are typically seen to be upset, down, worried and overall insecure. From the lyric analysis we can get an understanding of how to portray our codes and conventions through the music video. Firstly we are going to include shots which match the lyrics literally. On the second line where is says ' missing out the cracks in the pavement' as a group we decided to film a shot of cracks in a London pavement. This will allow the audience to try and think about the bidding meaning and how it is effecting the artist. Therefore by annotating the lyrics we are clearly coming up with codes and conventions that will be effective and engaging in our soul genre music video.
Secondly the next code and convention that we plan to incorporate into our music video is, how controversial the world has become. Controversial is related to arguments, disagreements and seen to be negative which is stereotypical in a soul genre music video. The lyric analysis helped me in identifying this code and convention. From line 20 where is says 'Everybody taking different sides' as an audience we can get an understanding that the artist is trying to express how everybody has different opinions. And the use of using the word 'sides' also highlights how these different opinions usually go against each other and cause anger and depression for the artist. The audience can then build up a relationship with the artist because the target audience is likely to have gone through something controversial in their life. Therefore the audience can connect better and relate to the artist as they have more understanding the artist true feelings towards a well known hated topic, controversial.
Thirdly another code and convention that has been addressed by analysing the lyrics is, how negative and repetitive her lifestyle is in the music industry. This is a typical and conventional aspect of a soul genre music video. The artist is portrayed as being lonely and run down from how repetitive and fast paced her life has become. From the last verse you can see how many times 'Are the wonders of my world' is repeated. This to emphasis how repetitive her life has become and how it has made the artist lonely and negative about life. Therefore the audience can grasp an understanding of what it must be like to be an artist in the music industry, and how behind all the fame and wealth, life can be very difficult and depressing for the artist. This makes the audience feel sympathy towards the artist. For some of the target audience that also have a busy lifestyle, who have minimal spare time to spend with friends and family, the artist becomes relatable for them and therefore causing the song to be very engaging and effectively relatable for the target audience.

From analysing the lyrics of the song it has also helped us in planning our cinematography from the music video itself. We have planned certain shots that may be effective in engaging the audience with the emotions of the artist, at certain stages of the song, when the lyrics are very meaningful and effective.
Firstly we have planned to incorporate panning shots of the artist having fun and laughing with her friends. This was due to the lyrics that state "memories are fresh" this tells the audience that the artist can clearly remember previous good times that she has had. Also by mentioning her memories the audience can get an understanding of how they have become memories and no longer exist in her present life. This makes it hard for the artist to live happily without having any laughs and fun with friends. The panning shot was planned to be overlapping a shot of the artist playing the piano, so the audience can get an understanding of how the artist reflects on her past when playing the piano. This is engaging and effective in showing the artist true emotions when we have panning shots of her memories, and the close ups of the artist on the piano.
Secondly the cinematography that we also plan to include is a high angle shot to make the artist look vulnerable and weak. This is stereotypical of the soul music genre, because the artists are known to be run down and upset, therefore highlighting that the artist is vulnerable, the audience can build a relationship and start to understand why she is feeling weak and down. We planned to use a high angle shot of the artist leaving a phone box after not being able to contact a friend or family, and then walking back into the busy lifestyle of London. This shot was inspired by line four where the lyrics say "Is there anyone I could call" these lyrics show to the audience that she is finding it hard to contact someone who will be there for her.

Also due to analysing the lyrics it has also helped our group in deciding the correct and effective editing styles to include in the music video. Throughout all the lyrics the hidden meanings and messages portray how the artist is reflecting on her past. Therefore we have planned to incorporate the use of a black and white filter. We feel the black and white filter will be effective in showing to the audience that she is looking back on her past. The white part of the filter represents the artist past and how she use to be happy and innocent, and the black portrays how her present is now depressing compared to her past. "memories are fresh" this phrase effectively shows to the audience about how she can clearly remember her past. This suggests to the audience that the change in her life from the past times to now, has been negative and made the artist feel sad and out of control of her own life.
Another editing style we plan to include is fast paced editing, this is unconventional to the soul genre as it does not allow for the audience to connect and see the artist emotions. We have planned to use this because of the build up before the chorus "shows that we ain't gonna take it, Shows that we ain't gonna stand shit. Shows that we are united" we thought the use of fast paced editing will effective show how the artist is getting worked up and becoming angry at the lifestyle she is living in. Therefore by using a fast paced editing the audience can get an understanding how how the artist is becoming sick and tired of her life at present, and the build up of fast paced shots to then go back to normal pace as she sings the chorus, emphasis how much the artist misses home and how she would love to return to her hometown. This allows the audience to connect and build up a relationship with the artist because she is showing her true inner feelings.

Mes en scene is also a very important aspect of a music video and by analysing the lyrics we have come up with the different mes en scene aspects that we plan to include. Firstly the setting and iconography was discussed and planned when the lyrics state "I like the city where the air is so thick and opaque" this straight away suggests to the group that we should film some shots in London city location. Therefore the majority of the setting will be London. Therefore this will be effecting in engaging with the audience because it is a familiar and well known setting, that the audience will be able to relate, as they have an understanding of what life is like in London. Also the only iconography we really plan on using is the use of the microphone. This has been due to when we film an on stage shot of the artist the microphone will be essential in ensuring the artist looks professional. The audience can look up and idolise the artist knowing that she has made it successful as a music artist. This therefore improves the artist image and liveability.
The second aspect of the mes en scene we have planned to incorporate due to analysing the song lyrics is; lighting. From the lyrics "I've been walking in the same way" we have planned to use low key lighting this is because the lyrics suggest that the artist is depressed and the low key lighting will be able to emphasis that the artist is not enjoying life at the moment. This will lead to the audience feeling sympathetic towards the artist. Another lighting we have planned to include is high key lighting, this was inspired from the lyrics "memories are fresh" the use of high key lighting will also emphasis how the memories were a good part of her life, which will lead to the audience getting a better understanding of how much the artist misses her previous life.
Thirdly the positioning of characters have been planned due to the lyric analysis. Where the lyrics say "shows that we ain't gonna stand shit" the artist is going to be sitting down playing the piano. This show to the audience that the artist is thinking of ways to overcome her difficulties. Due to the artist sitting down it shows to the audience that she has had enough of the busy lifestyle, she now wants to sit down and take a break. The audience can get an understanding of the artist emotions and how she feels towards her present life. Which therefore makes the song more effective and engaging and overall more understanding for the audience.
Fourthly the costume hair and make up has being inspired to be casual and normal until the artist is up on stage singing the chorus. At this point the artist is going to look glamorous with exotic hair and make up and a black dress. The words "hometown" inspired the costume in the chorus. The reason for the artist being dressed up, is because this is what the artist wants the most. To be back in her hometown, so the artist dresses up and looks professional to show how much she is trying. The audience can build up a relationship with the artist, this is because they can see how much effort she is going to. This makes the artist an icon and role model for her efforts, and leads to her like ability increasing, due to her professionalism and realism.
Finally the last aspect of mes en scene is facial expressions and body language, the lyrics : "I've been walking in the same way as I did, missing out the cracks" have inspired my group to make sure that the artist emotions and pain are conveyed through facial expression and body language. The body language that we plan to include will be quite slouched to show how tired to artist is. Also the facial expressions will be emphasising how emotionally drained the artist has become due to "walking in the same way" this part of the lyrics especially emphasised how the artist life has become repetitive. The audience can build up there understanding of how much this song means to the artist, through her emotions and feelings being portrayed through facial expressions and the tired body language the artist will use.

The style of music video that will plan on creating is a narrative based music video, with some performance elements. We thought that with all the hidden meanings through out the music video, it would become a very difficult song to understand without portraying the story through the music video. The part of the song "I like it in the city when two worlds collide" To show to the audience what this part of the song means and how it has effected the artist. The best way to show this to the audience would be convey a narrative style music video. The performance aspect of the music video was inspired just by the chorus to show the artist is professional. The makes the audience look up to the artist and idolise her as a true role model.  The artist and audience can then build a relationship due to the relatable locations, for example London. This makes the artist relatable because the audience can recognise and familiarise themselves with the surroundings. Also due to the mes en scene and editing styles to portray the artist emotions and feeling the audience can build up and understand how the artist is feeling which leads to the audience becoming more engaged and aware of the what the song means.

In conclusion analysing the lyrics have benefited by group in having an understanding of what to include in the music video. By looking deeper into the lyrics I have a much better understanding of what the song actually means, which will lead our music video being effectively in being conventional to the song itself. Also the lyrics have given us timings of when and where to include certain shots so, has meant that planning our actually music video a lot easier. Overall this task has improved the groups awareness and ideas of what to include and how to include it in our music video.
