Planning editing - miss miller

Planning Editing

Before shooting our music video, as a group we planned how and what editing styles we would include. The four editing styles that we have planed to include in our soul genre music video are: fast paced editing, slow timing of shots, overlapping/layering of shots and black and white filters. We thought as a group that these editing styles would be most effective in engaging the audience with the artist emotions, and the songs meanings.

Firstly black and white filters were incorporated in our planning, This is because black and white filters are conventional and stereotypically seen in a soul genre music video. We planned to ensure that our audience  can relate and create a relationship with our artist. Using a black and white filter the audience are able to understand  that the artist is reflecting on her past. This will make it easier for the audience to understand and convey an image of how the artists past is still effecting her massively. The black and white filter also represents the artist as being down in life and emotionally broken this is a stereotypical representation within the soul genre. Having this included in our music video will show to the audience straight away that it is a soul genre music video. The audience will be able to understand how the artist past is missed and how she is now caught up in a lifestyle that she can not escape. This will overall enable my target audience to be able to begin to build up a relationship with the artist and gain a better understanding as to why the artist is depressed. The use of the black and white filters is conventional to the soul genre because it relates to the past, which the artists are usually singing about in the soul genre.

Secondly the editing style we have planned to include is slow timing of shots, this is so that the audience can relate to the artist. The artist becomes more relatable due to her emotions being clearly shown through the slow timing of shots, allowing the audience more time to connect and see more clearly how the artist feels, which leads to the audience being more engaged and involved in the music video. Once the audience see the artist true emotions and feelings they can start to build up a relationship and relate to similar events that have happened to themselves. Overall the slow timing of shots builds up the artist emotions more dramatically so that they are clearer to identify for the audience, which then makes the audience begin to question why the artist is feeling this way. Therefore builds an appeal to the artist as the audience want to find out more about the artist.

We have also planned to use overlapping of shots when the artist is playing the piano, this is to show the artist is reflecting on her life and past. The audience can get an understanding of this when she plays the piano, she begins to reminisce on her memories especially in her childhood. It is conventional to the soul genre as it shows her emotions overlapping the events of her past. Also the overlappingillustrates how her life has become repetitive and constantly the same boring stressful life. The audience can then get a better understanding of how the artist is sad and upset, this is conventional to the soul genre as artists are typically known to be down.

Finally fast paced editing we planned to use in order to show how the artist emotions are building up. We have planed to use This just before the chorus, this is so the pace of the video goes back to normal in order to emphasis how important the chorus is. The audience can get an understanding of how much the music industry life has got on top of the artist and how she is beginning to feel trapped and insecure. The face pace also illustrates to the audience that the artist is begin to become angry, this can lead to the audience beginning to understand how hard her life is. Therefore emphasising how much she misses her hometown.

In conclusion planning editing has helped our group understand what and where to include different editing styles in order to make are music video successful. The group came up with new innovative ideas while planning which I think will work well in our music video. Overall this planning has helped our group improve our range of editing techniques involved in our music video.

  1. You have provided an overall basic analysis of your group's chosen editing techniques, mentioning when they will be used and why, as well as some of the connotations; however, you need to consider the artist representation for each, as well as connotations and audience relationship.

    You need to:
    1) Consider the connotations of each example in more detail (elaborate on what each example represents etc.)
    2) Elaborate on the artist's representation in each example and how this enables the audience to build a relationship
    3) Elaborate on the generic codes and conventions
    4) Elaborate on conclusion by explaining the importance of planning and editing within music videos
