lighting and colour - Miss Miller

Planning lighting and colour

The lighting and colour is essential to plan and ensure a range of different lighting and colour is included in order to portray the artists feelings and emotions. The lighting and colour helps the audience to understand how she is feeling, and what she is trying to say. For example low key lighting would show a sad mood and set the scene for the music video. In this planning we had to come up with five different lighting and colours, the five we choose were conventional to the soul genre: Low key lighting, Red lipstick, Black lighting, High-key lighting and Black & white filter. All of our five planned connote love, depression, down, heartbreak, fear and past. All of these connotations are stereotypical and conventional to the soul music genre. Overall the lighting and colour will effectively help the audience to understand and relate to the music genre.
The first lighting and colour we planned to use was the Red lipstick. The colour red connotes: love, passion and desire. We are planning on using the red lipstick when Amy is performing on stage at the chorus part of the song. This is to emphasis to the audience that the artist still has hope in finding love and returning to her family. It also shows the artist as being talented which the audience respect and build up their likability for the artist. Amy is going to be in a black dress which connotes elegance and mysterious as she is trying to overcome her past, the red lipstick adds to the outfit in order to make the artist stand out and be memorable. Overall the red lipstick leads to the audience getting an understanding of how strong minded the artist is, because the audience know that her previous relationships have ended badly and she still has the confidence and will to carry on looking for love.

The second lighting and colour we planned was low key lighting, this is a very stereotypical of a soul genre music video as it sets a sad and vulnerable sort of mood straight away. We have planned to use the low key lighting through out the majority of the music video. The low key lighting helps the artist portray her thoughts, feelings and emotions. This helps the music video to become more relatable and effective in engaging the audience with the artists feelings. The low key lighting being used throughout the majority of the music video, shows that although the artist is in a lot of depression and sadness, she still carries on with her life. This represents the artist again as strong minded and a individual with a large amount of respect for herself. Overall the low key lighting represents the dark side of the artist and is used throughout, because the whole song is to do with wanting to escape her life and return to her home town.

The third light and colour we planned to use was back lighting, as a group we thought this would be effective in engaging the audience with how the artist is feeling and her insecurity. The backlighting is being used in order to create a silhouette effect when the artist is in the performance style of the music video on stage. This is used to highlight her shyness and insecurity which shows to the audience that she hiding her identity. By hiding her identity the audience can build up an understand that the artist is fairly cold blooded and pessimistic about life. This leads to the audience feeling sympathy and sorry for the artist, due to their lack of confidence.

We also plan to incorporate the use of a black and white filter in our music video. The filter is conventional as black and white can represents dark and light, past and future. We plan to use this filter when the artist is playing the piano. This is because black and white filter produces an effect of reflecting on her past. When playing the piano the artist is reminiscing her childhood memories and wishes she could escape her current lifestyle. The colours used black and white, show to the audience that the artist is vulnerable and innocent due to the black surrounding the white. The artist is shown through the white colour which means she is innocent but caught up in darkness, that is leading to the artist to be depressed and insecure about herself. This overall gives the audience a better understanding of the thoughts and feelings and the emotions the artist is going through.

Finally we are going to use high key lighting. The high key lighting helps to represents happiness and enjoyability which is unconventional to the soul genre, because the soul genre is usually mainly about sadness and depression. The high key lighting is used to show flash backs of when the artist was in her home town, and how they were happy memories. This we be when we film at a friends house and show the artist laughing and having fun with her friends. This lighting helps us to illustrate our narrative of the artist wanting to return to her hometown. Showing happy memories that the audience can understand that it is back in her hometown. Is important because the whole narrative is about the artist wanting to return to her hometown, because this is where she enjoys life and has a sociable and fun life.

In conclusion the lighting and colour will help the audience understand to and relate to the music video. The planning was very helpful because we came up with very good ideas as a group, I personally think that if we did not plan the lighting and colour we would not have thought about it at the time of filming. The black and white filter was a key aspect of planning as when we start to do our editing, we will now ensure that the filter is on, so that the audience can gain a better understanding as to what the narrative of the music video is about. Overall this planning task has been very effective in making sure we include a range of lightings and colours, in order to construct a enjoyable music video.

Digipak Analysis - Miss Georgiou

Digipak Analysis - Duffy
uRepresentation of music artist
uConnotations of the digipak
uColours
uDesign/layout
uChoice of images
uTypography
uStyle of language
uHow does the digipak promote the music genre?
uHow does the digipak promote the artist?

uHow does the digipak attract an audience?

A digipak contains higher quality images and meaning in them. They also usually contain a letter or note from the artist which is aimed directly at the fans, which gives a more personal feel towards the fans from the artist. Also a digipak can contain bonus tracks which the original cd may not include. A digipak has six sides which therefore gives the artist more areas to market themselves and include more information such as: lyrics. Overall a digipak makes it a collectable item for the fans and therefore increasing the demand for the digipak and increasing the publicity around Duffy.

In Duffy's digipak the artist is represented to be sad, upset and depressed through the facial expressions and body language. The artist is not facing or looking at the camera in both images of her which portrays her to be depressed and upset, the audience can get an understanding of this because by looking down and to the side, shows to the audience that the artist is not ready to face her problems yet. This is conventional to the soul genre because the soul genre music is stereotypically known for the music to be about sad previous experiences, which the audiences can relate to because they are likely to be on common grounds and therefore can build up a relationship with the artist, due to going through similar circumstances as the artist themselves.

Also the colour theme is black and white which is conventional to the soul genre, and frequently used within the soul genre. The colour theme of black and white represents reflecting on your past. By having this filter on the Digipak It shows to the audience that the artist is going to be reflecting on her past. Due to the the filter, the white is her face and hair and the rest is black. White connotes innocence and black connotes problems and depression. Therefore the artist is seen to be innocent surrounded by problems, which is leading the artist to be depressed and feel suffocated by the darkness surrounding her. This is conventional to the soul music genre, because the black and white filter is stereotypical used and effectively and helps to convey a theme and make the music video easier to understand for the audience.

The design and layout of the Digipak is a stereotypical layout with six sides, which allow more room for visible artwork, this sustains a better chance of attracting potential buyers, as they will see the digipak as not just a cd but more of a collectors item. The digipak includes high quality images and more in-depth meanings in them. It also contains a letter from the artist directly to the fans, in order to make it feel personal. Another aspects of the benefits of the digipak is that it usually contains an extra bonus track. Finally on the digipak all the information is very easily accessible, making it more appealing and long lasting.

The choice of images are conventional to the soul genre because the artist is on her own, isolated and close up. The use of a close up makes the image more relatable for the audience. This is because the audience have a clearer view of the artist emotions which allows the audience to have an understanding of how the artist is feeling, therefore allows the audience to build a relationship with the artist. In the close up where the artist is looking down portrays the theme of reflecting on her past, this is conventional to the soul genre because the artist is in black and white which also represents the past and reflecting. The soul genre is known for artist reflecting on previous times which makes this choice of images very effective and conventional to the soul genre.

The digipak style grew in popularity among the record labels and recording artists in 2000s. The digipak helps to promote the music genre as it is six sides which allows more room for the artist to display conventional themes that relate to the soul genre. In the digipak from Duffy, the soul genre is promoted through the themes of past, depression and innocence. This is shown through the colour theme and style of images shown. The soul genre is stereotypically seen to be sad and heartbreak style of music videos. This can be seen through the connotations of Duffys digipak which overall promotes the soul genre itself.

The digipak promotes the artist by displaying their range of songs, choice of images, the title of their name. The artist is promoted by being displayed on the front cover and their name being the largest font on the digipak cover. The name of the artist is in an unfamiliar font which portrays the artist as unique and different from the other artists in the music industry. Which positively promotes the artist to be interesting and conventional to the soul music genre. Another way the artist is promoted is through the CD itself having her name written on it the same way it is written on the front of the digipak. This acts as a reminder to the audience that the artist is unique and memorable.

The digipak attracts an audience attention by not just being a cd album but by being the digipak, which makes it more of a collectable item not just a CD. Another aspect of why Duffys digipak attracts the audiences attention is through the use of simplistic colours (black and white) which will make it stand out on the shelf. This is because most other artist use bright colours on their album covers, so by having simple black and white will be eye catching and engaging for a potential customer looking at the CD isle.

Overall from this digipak analysis I have learnt that the digipak makes the item not just a CD but collectable item, which means that it attracts a wider target audience. It also targeted at fans of the artist as well as the rest of the public. Also the conventional colours of the soul genre should be present on the digipak so that it can be easily identified by a soul genre fan. In conclusion I have learned the codes and conventions that are stereotypical in the soul genre. So I now have the knowledge to be able to adapt, follow or develop these conventions when I create my own digipak. I also have learned that a digipak can market and brand an artist as they are able to express themselves freely in the sixe sides provided. Which therefore engages the target audience to find out more about an artist, because they may be interested in why certain representations are being portrayed, for example depression.

planning artist image - Miss Miller

Artist Image

The artist image and representation is very important to plan. This is so we ensure that the artist is conventional and relatable to the soul genre audience. When planning the artists image we decide to convey the artist as extraordinary and ordinary throughout the music video. This is from the use of dyers theory and is important to include in a soul genre music video. By planning ahead it gives our artist, Amy, time to arrange the outfits she will need to have on the days of filming.

Firstly we planned the casual everyday look. We decided that this would be conventional to the soul genre as it makes the artist seem normal and therefore easily relatable for the audience. By causal everyday cloths we means: jeans and a top. This would be a simple costume that you would expect to see on a day to day basis being worn by the public. Therefore making the artist ordinary and relatable. We plan to use this artist image when we are filming the narrative style of the music video. This will be when the artist is in her hometown with her friends, as this will show her as an innocent ordinary person living a normal life. This is important to convey so that the audience will be similar to this representation and can therefore build up a relationship with the artist.

Another artist representation we plan to use is the extraordinary look. This will be portrayed by our artist wearing a black dress with heels, curly hair and make up. This is conventional to the soul genre as it will show that she is talented and will link to dyers theory of being extraordinary and ordinary. With the black dress with plan to use red lipstick. The red symbolise's love, and suggest that she is still looking for love. But the use of a black dress displays to the audience that the artist is depressed and down, which is conventional to the soul genre as the artists are typically sad and heartbroken. Therefore this artist representation conveys conventional themes by dressing up and the colours that the artist will be wearing.

The third artist image is when the artist is playing the piano and will be wearing: tights, black top, blacks skirt and black pumps. This is conventional to the soul genre because the use of black highlights the depression that artist is feeling. From the use of the piano the white keys represent the present day and the black keys present the past. Therefore the keys portray how her past is still effecting her present. Also due to the aritst wearing black it shows that she is still caught up in her past and is finding it hard to escape. The use of making no effort in the clothing she is wearing because it is plain. Suggests that she has no emotion which leads to the audience getting an understanding that the artist is cold and emotionless which relates to the narrative of the music video. This artist image is overall very relatable as it shows the artist to be ordinary and genuine. This is conventional to the soul genre because the artist rawness is being portrayed and this makes the audience feel more relatable to the artist.

Overall, the artists image is connoted through the use of black through out the costumes. This is because the black represents negativity and sadness which is in content as to what the song is about, and is conventional to the soul genre. The artist being seen as ordinary and extraordinary is very effective because the audience can relate to the ordinary style of the artist. But can also look up to the extraordinary style of the artist as a role model figure that the audience can idolise. Therefore the artist image reflects the meanings and connotes what her music is about, which helps the audience to understand what the artist is all about and makes the artist conventional to the soul genre.

cinematography - Miss Miller

Cinematography

Cinematography is very important when planning because we need to make sure that we include a diversity of different conventional camera shots to the soul genre. We have to ensure that we use a range of different shots so that are soul music video is not boring and repetitive for the audience.

Firstly we have planned to use close up shots. We have decided to use these shots when our artist is playing the piano and walking through London on her own. We feel that these close ups will help the audience to be able to relate to the artist easier, because they can get a clearer understanding of the artist emotions and feelings. We also plan to use close ups when the artist is performing, this is so audience can build up a relationship with the artist by seeing deeper into her emotions this will lead to the artists performance being more effective in connecting with the audience.
A close up is conventional to the soul genre because it allows the audience to build up a relationship with the artist, close ups are conventional because within the soul genre it is stereotypical for the artist to be reflecting on their past. Therefore using a close up it allows the audience to build up an understanding of the artists past and how she is feeling now.

We also planned to use long shots on stage and In London. We thought that the use of a long shot on stage, would show that the artist is alone which is conventional to the soul genre, and is a typical representation in the soul genre and makes the audience feel symphay towards the artist. Overall making the artist more relatable. Also having a long shot in London also conveys the theme of disconnected to the rest of the world, and isolated. This is conventional to the soul genre as artists with in the genre are portrayed to be alone and disconnected to make the audience feel sorry for the artist.
Overall a longshot is conventional in the soul genre because it represents the artist as isolated which is a typical representation in the soul genre. The long shot allows the audience to understand how the artist is sick of the fame world and wants to live a normal life again.

We have also planned to use panning camera technique in order to show how our artist is multi talented. This shot will be used when the artist is playing the piano in the music room and singing at the same time. The audience will have more respect and liking towards the artist knowing that she is multi talented which will lead to the audience talking about the artist more, and creating publicity around the artist and overall increasing her popularity. We also feel that using panning will make the music video more effective as the audience will not get bored of the same camera angles and shots being used as we will be including a range of different types to keep it interested.
A panning shots allows the audience to get a wider understanding on the surroundings of the artist. This is conventional to the soul genre as a typical setting in the soul genre is usually sparse which connotes to the audience that the artist is lonely even though she has fame. Which then leads the audience to believe that the artist is depressed.

The group have also planned to use a high angle as it makes the artist look vulnerable which is conventional to the soul genre. This is conventional to the song because the lyrics display how the artist is worried and insecure, and by including a high angle shot it makes the music video easier to understand and relate to. Also having a high angle can show to the audience that the artist is normal and does not think she is better than everyone else. This is conventional as soul genre artist want to be displayed as normal as they can so they are relatable to the audience.
A high angle is key to incorporate in a soul genre as it represents the artist to be vulnerable. This held the audience understand how the artists feels within the fame world. Overall creating an effect on the audience where they will want to look further into the artist, leading to the audience building a relationship with the artist to find out more about why the feel depressed.

We will also use a point of view shot with in the music video in order to show the artist skills of playing the piano. We are planning to use the point of view shot when the artist is playing the piano. This represents the artist as being open about her thoughts and feelings. The audience can build up a relationship with the artist and make connections if they also play piano similar to the artist. Overall the point of view helps to show to the audience how the artist feels and displays her emotions.
A point of view shot enables the audience to put themselves in the artists shoes, and understand how life is in the fame world. The reason for the point of view being used in the piano scene, is to show that the artists is playing the piano to relieve stress and to do something she has enjoyed before she was famous. Overall the point of view shot displays the artists thought and feelings which the audience are able to understand and can therefore begin to build up a relationship as to why the artist is feeling down and stressed.

In conclusion the use of planning cinematography has highlighted how important it is to use a range of different camera angles, in order to make the music video entertaining and relatable for the target audience. Therefore if we did only use a couple of camera angles the video would be boring and unpopular. However planning cinematography helped our group to come up with ideas that are conventional to the soul genre, for example the high angle showing vulnerability. This specific example was planned in a group decision and we thought this would be conventional to the soul genre and help our audience to begin to understand the artists feelings, being depressed.

Setting and iconography - Miss Miller

Planning setting and iconography

It is important that we plan as a group before filming the music video, so that our time we have to create our production is used effectively. The setting and iconography is important to consider when planning as it sets the scene of the music video, which therefore makes it easier for the audience to understand the narrative.  The different range of settings used in the music video are important as they must be places that are familiar to the audience so that they can relate and build up a relationship with the artist, throughout the music video. Furthermore the iconography is key to making the music video conventional to the soul genre. For example the use of the piano in the video is very stereotypical and is recognised as a typical soul genre musical instrument. This will lead to the audience having a good understanding of what to expect in the music video, and being able to compare the music videos similarities with other soul genre music videos in todays charts.

One of the settings my group decided to use was our school. The reason for using our school in the music video is to strengthen our narrative style music video. We thought by using this setting it will make the narrative relatable and conventional in showing that it was to do with the artists life before fame. We also intend to include black and white filters, this is because the use of black and white filters suggest the past and it shows how the artist is reflecting on her past, which makes the audience build up a relationship with the artist as they can see her growing up into the artist she is today. The location within the school that we will be using is the music room, this is so the audience can understand that this is where the artists music career started.  Our plan is to crop out the background in order to use cgi images to convey the artists thoughts and feelings. Which will help the audience to connect with the artist emotionally.
The iconography being used within this setting is the piano. The piano is a typical soul genre instrument that shows to the audience that the artist is multi talented, because the artist can both sing and play an instrument. It is conventional to the soul genre because within my music video, the artist is going to be reflecting on her past. The black and white piano also connotes the past. Therefore is a conventional instrument within the soul genre.

Also by using the school music room it will show to the audience that she was just a normal girl, and this is one of the key aspects we want to convey in our music video. Due to us planning as a group we have found some barriers and things that may become difficult when we begin to film. By planning we can plan ahead so that these barriers do not slow down our filming schedule. We decided that we would use black drapes in order to cover up the background around the music practise room. The reason for this is because we feel that the room would make our media production look amateurish and just thrown together. Therefore by using black drapes we can take out the background and make this part of the music video look professional. The music practise room being a small size comes as a positive to our group as it will be less room we have to cover with the black drapes. While planning our setting and iconography it is important that we asses the health and safety of filming in this location. The music room proves to be a safe location as there is nothing else in there other than the piano, stall and radiator. The hazard risk is very small and therefore we will ensure on the day of filming that we use all our equipment sensibly and safely in order to keep the health and safety of us to the best standard.
The iconography within this setting is the black stall, the black stall is conventional as is commonly seen throughout professional soul genre music videos. The stall being black connotes to the audience that the artist is depressed and is sitting with the depression which portrays to the audience that the artist can not escape this depression.

Another location we have planned to use within our music video, is also in school, but the stage which will either be in the drama studio or the main hall depending on what is available at the time. The stage is being used for our performance style side of the music video. We have planned to use this setting as it is typically conventional to the soul genre and shows her the artist would have done gigs and performances in her building up to her fame. Also by using the stage we will have a wide range of different types of lighting we can use and incorporate into our music video, to make the music video look professional. One of the techniques we are going to use in the back-lighing in order to create a silhouette of the artist, this is in order to emphasis how the artist feels lonely and lost, furthermore relating to the song as the artists wants to come back to her hometown. The way we are going to film in this setting on stage; are going to be as if there is a real performance taking place, therefore making the video as realistic as possible, furthermore making the audience feel like they are watching a live performance. When planning this location we did identity a few limitations of using the hall: due to the high usage of the school hall we will only be able to film when the hall is not in use by other members of the school. Furthermore the stage is not the biggest and fairly small compared to stages seen to be used by professional artists. The health and safety risks of this location are small. The only risk to be seen as dangerous, is the risk of falling off the stage. In order to prevent this we are going to be extra careful when filming on and around the stage, especially when near the edge.

Another two settings we have planned to include in our media production is Theydon Bois ( which is her hometown in the music video ) and London.

Firstly Theydon Bois is a location that is very accessible for all group members and is quick and easy for all of us to get there. Which means we could film on short request if need be. Also Theydon Bois is a small village that portrays happy times for the artist. Within this location we will be using one of the group members houses in order for it to be the house the artist grew up in. We thought the use of using a location that the artist grew up in, would make it easier for the audience to understand he child hood and therefore be able to connect and build up a relationship with the artist, overall making the video more effective and intriguing for the audience. By planning the location we did come across a few possible problems using this location. The members of the groups house it is, if the house is busy and cannot be used on certain days could slow down our filming schedule. Also if one of the members couldn't find the location this would be a problem. Therefore in order to overcome these situations the member of the group is going to warn her family of the days we would be filming so that there will be no problem. Also as a group we have formed a group char therefore if a member has trouble finding another we can message each other very easily.

The Theydon Bois setting is conventional to the soul genre because it brings normality and realism to the music video which the target audience are able to relate to.  During the Theydon Bois setting the iconography that will occur will be: sofas, phones, televisions, all these iconography's are normal everyday things that the audience would come across on a day to day basis. Therefore the setting and iconography within the Theydon Bois location is very conventional as it allows the audience to effectively relate and build up a relationship with the audience.

The London location is where most of the health and safety risks are as you are surrounded by possible hazards such as heavy traffic of cars and people. Therefore we have set out to be as careful as we possibly can and to stick together as it would be very easy to lose one and other. The location was planned so that the audience can have a familiar location to relate to with the artist. London being a very well known city and somewhere we expect most of our target audience have either been to or seen on television. We felt as a group this location will be effective in creating a sense of familiar grounds between the artist and the audience. It also portray to the audience of how the artist was once a normal girl, going unnoticed on a busy city, and how it has all changed now.

The London location is conventional to the soul genre and commonly seen throughout successful soul genre music videos. London is in contrast with the theydon bois setting as they are opposites, one being a city lifestyle (London) and they other being a village hometown lifestyle (Theydon Bois). The contrast allows the audience to understand that this is where the artist is becoming distressed and wants to return to her hometown. Therefore the setting of London helps the audience to build up a relationship with the artist as they can build up a relationship and understanding of how the artist is sick of her city life and wants to return home. The iconography that'll well be evident throughout the London setting will be; buses, flat type buildings, bus stops, telephone box. All of these iconography's enable the audience to gain the understanding that the artist is surrounded by a city life.

In conclusion
the research has helped my group plan out how we will use certain locations and what iconography will be needed within our production. For example the use of the microphone when filming on stage, the microphone will show the professionalism of the artist. Overall this planning has helped my group develop our ideas of what we will include in our filming, and we have become more realistic. We highlighted the problems that could occur and found solutions for all of them. I believe that this planning has achieved our group to have a better understanding of the sort of schedule we will have to stick to,  in order to include all the different settings and iconography.

questionnaire - miss miller

Questionnaire

uIntro – why was research carried out? Why did you ask 40 people? How will you use results to create your music video?
uMain
Include pie charts and explain what each chart tells you (paragraph of analysis of results after EACH pie chart); explain what you will then take on board and give examples of what you will use in your own video and why for each pie chart
Include a paragraph on the theory you have chosen to apply to your questionnaire and music video (CCCS, McCracken or Hebdige).
Include a paragraph on vox pops and what the purpose of them was; how were they beneficial?
uConclusion explain what you found useful within the research; how you will incorporate your results into your music video, and what you might do differently if you were to carry out the research again

Research was carried out to gain a further understanding of our target audiences preferred style of a soul genre music video. Research was conducted so that we had a outline of the types of codes and conventions we should include in our music video, so that we knowledge of how to create a successful music video. We targeted 40 people in our questionnaire so that we had a wide spread audience, which makes the results more meaningful and summarised for our target audience. Also by asking 40 people we would be able to gain an idea of the target audiences preferences and dislikes in a music video. I will then use our results, to construct our music video, by either developing or adapting the most popular answers to the questionnaire.

From this pie chart 'What is your gender' I can get an understanding the target audience is both male and female, which is also quite equally shared. There is slightly more female fans than male but overall, Adele targets the mass market of both male and female. The slight shift to the female target audience is due to Adele's songs involving heartaches over men, which is more relatable for a female because they may have gone through similar circumstances. Therefore  allowing the female audience to build up a relationship with the artist.
The reason for carrying out this closed question in our questionnaire is to get an understanding of the gender of Adele's target audience. Therefore we can get an understanding that it is slightly more female than male but overall quite equally split. This has helped understand that the soul genre target audience is both male and female. When I construct my music video I will ensure that it can be relatable to both male and female.

From this pie chart 'What is your age group?' we can get an understanding of the age group we had carried out the questionnaire on. From the results of the pie chart the most common age group to be involved and have interest in our questionnaire and Adele was the age group of 19-21. This is the most popular age group because Adele music is easily relatable in that age bracket, this is because when Adele's heart break took place she was around this age, so the 19-21 aged audience have the best understanding of what it feels like, because they have likely gone through similar circumstances and can feel sympathy towards Adele.
The least amount of people we surveyed was the 27-30 year old aged people. This age group is not specifically targeted by Adele as they are an older generation but do still have a interest in her music and is important to take onboard
what there thoughts are, as they are involved in a small majority of the target audience.

The next question we asked was 'What is your preferred style of music video?' From the image of the pie chart you can clearly see that the most popular answer is narrative being 50% of the 40 people we questioned. Then performance being second most popular and obviously concept a small majority. Narrative is the most popular preferred style of music video. This is because within the soul genre, the artists tend to write songs about the past, and portray there story through a narrative based style of music video. The results we got leaves us to choose or include both of the narrative and performance base due to being the most popular answers. I think including both music video styles in the music video will allow our group to make a successful music video, that targets the largest possibly target audience.

The next question was 'What is your favourite editing style and why?'  The favourite answer was slow paced editing taking a third of the pie chart, the next in line was filters with almost a quarter of the pie chart. When my group and I come to construct our music video, due to these results these will be the main two editing styles we use. The slow paced editing will be used to with close ups in order to express the artists emotions and feelings. Which will make the scene more relatable and understanding for the audience. Also the use of filters will likely be black and white filters. This is because soul gene music videos commonly use black and white filter as it represents the past, and Adeles songs are what have happened to her in the past, therefore using the filters makes the song more understandable. The least favourite answer was Jump cut this is due to the soul genre being slow and transitions being used between shots. A jump cut would rarely be seen or used in a soul genre music video and therefore was why it was the least frequent response.
Another question on our questionnaire was "What camera angles do you find must effective in the soul genre music videos and why?" This was an open question but for the sake of the pie chart we listed the most popular answers. The Most effective camera angle was the close ups, from my research I can understand that the audience prefer a close up because they can see the artist emotions and feelings clearer than any of shot, which allows them to build up a relationship with the artist. The long shot and mid shot were fairly equal on our pie chart and a popular answer. This is due to the soul genre artist usually using locations that relate to the meaning of the song, and show these locations through to use of a long shot. Also the mid shots are frequently used through a soul genre music video to show their costume. As the costume plays a role in how the artist wants to be portrayed, an example of this is when Adele wears dark colour clothing the emphasis the struggle and pain she is feeling. All of these shots will be evident in our music video as we want to make a realistic soul genre music video that is as similar as we can get it to Adele music video.

The next question asked was ' What is it about Adele that you like ? ' The two most popular answers were voice and relatability. This is due to Adele's voice be unique and different to a lot of the other artists in the music industry. The relatable received just as many votes on our questionnaire. This is because the content of soul genre music is typically based on personal experiences. Therefore if the artists song is about something the audience can relate to, it increases the relationship between the audience and the artist. The results from this questionnaire will be taken on board and the most frequent answers will be used within our music video. In order to create a liked and successful music video.

The next question asked in our questionnaire was 'Explain what sort of theme you would feel you would like to see in a soul music video?' The most common answers were shared between love, heartbreak and family which is conventional to the soul genre music videos. Most soul genre music videos are themed with the idea of love. Love can be involved in heartbreak and family, so the overall theme that audience would like to see in a soul music video is love. This will be taken onboard when constructing our music video. The most commonly used narrative is that the artist has just had a tough break up and is heartbroken, and lost in herself. This could be a potential narrative that we use in our music video.

The next question was an open question ' Describe the setting that you would normally see in a soul music video?' This part chart was quite equally split between the answers being: city, isolated, pub/bar and the most common being stage. This is most likely because when an artist is on stage they are in their natural environment which makes the performance more genuine. Soul genre music videos hold a lot of emotions and rawness within their songs and i think we will use a stage in our production. As it would look professional on a stage and relate to the soul genre music videos. The stage would be used but also the use of green screen in order to include some of the other location such as isolated. I think the green screen could hold a setting where it is isolated, and therefore become more conventional to the soul genre music videos.

The next question on our questionnaire is 'What is your favourite Adele song?'  this was a closed question because we gave the audience a list of songs they could have choose from. The most popular answer was hometown glory. We planned to use the song hometown glory and after carrying out our research, we could clearly see that we had made a good choice as hometown glory had a third of the pie chart, the most popular answer. This song doesn't include the typical heartbreak theme that you would normally expect from a soul genre music video. But is still very conventional to the genre as it conveys a theme of family and her love for her hometown, and how she wants thing to go back to how they were when she was younger. The audience can build up a relationship with the audience as they would be of a similar age, and can relate to this sort of feeling of wanting to wind back the clock. Overall from this question it has given my group a boost in confidence with the song choice and has kept our plans of using this song together.

The final question we asked was 'Why do you think Adele is conventional to the soul genre?' as you can see from the pie chart the most favourable answer was that Adele sings about conventional topics. Her topics are mainly love based, and in context with heart breaks and the consequences of break ups. Another popular answer was that she uses closes ups frequently in her videos. This is evident and is conventionally to the soul genre music videos. As it makes the artist more relatable and overall helps for the audience to build a relationship with the artist because they can understand the emotions and pain of the artists through the close ups being used. Overall this pie chart will help me when constructing my music video because i will use the most popular answers, for example: 'sings about convention topics' and then use them in my music video in order to create a successful music video, and conventional to the soul genre.

In conclusion our questionnaire has benefited our group in deciding on codes and conventions to include in the music videos, locations, song choice and more. All of this is extremely vital to get correct in order to make the music video as engaging as we can for the target audience. I will be using most of the favourable answers and constructing a music video around them in order to be conventional to the soul genre aspects that our target audience expect.

Subculture - A group of people who are united through a common value system and tastes. A group who are positioned outside of the mainstream. (go against what is popular )
Most subcultures are seen as rebellious and have an attitude towards capitalism and consumerism.
Grant McCracken believes the post modern world is full of diversity, dynamism and creativity. I agree with McCracken as he says that if we look at the array of values, and ideologies then we can't say all sub cultures come from one culture. They must come from various cultures but are able to be 'Self Sufficient' (stand without mainstream cultures). I agree with Grant as i think that the sub cultures in the world are a mixture of different cultures, and this can be evident if you look deeper into the sub cultures and get an understanding of the cultures that are involved in the sub cultures.
