planning artist image - Miss Miller

Artist Image

The artist image and representation is very important to plan. This is so we ensure that the artist is conventional and relatable to the soul genre audience. When planning the artists image we decide to convey the artist as extraordinary and ordinary throughout the music video. This is from the use of dyers theory and is important to include in a soul genre music video. By planning ahead it gives our artist, Amy, time to arrange the outfits she will need to have on the days of filming.

Firstly we planned the casual everyday look. We decided that this would be conventional to the soul genre as it makes the artist seem normal and therefore easily relatable for the audience. By causal everyday cloths we means: jeans and a top. This would be a simple costume that you would expect to see on a day to day basis being worn by the public. Therefore making the artist ordinary and relatable. We plan to use this artist image when we are filming the narrative style of the music video. This will be when the artist is in her hometown with her friends, as this will show her as an innocent ordinary person living a normal life. This is important to convey so that the audience will be similar to this representation and can therefore build up a relationship with the artist.

Another artist representation we plan to use is the extraordinary look. This will be portrayed by our artist wearing a black dress with heels, curly hair and make up. This is conventional to the soul genre as it will show that she is talented and will link to dyers theory of being extraordinary and ordinary. With the black dress with plan to use red lipstick. The red symbolise's love, and suggest that she is still looking for love. But the use of a black dress displays to the audience that the artist is depressed and down, which is conventional to the soul genre as the artists are typically sad and heartbroken. Therefore this artist representation conveys conventional themes by dressing up and the colours that the artist will be wearing.

The third artist image is when the artist is playing the piano and will be wearing: tights, black top, blacks skirt and black pumps. This is conventional to the soul genre because the use of black highlights the depression that artist is feeling. From the use of the piano the white keys represent the present day and the black keys present the past. Therefore the keys portray how her past is still effecting her present. Also due to the aritst wearing black it shows that she is still caught up in her past and is finding it hard to escape. The use of making no effort in the clothing she is wearing because it is plain. Suggests that she has no emotion which leads to the audience getting an understanding that the artist is cold and emotionless which relates to the narrative of the music video. This artist image is overall very relatable as it shows the artist to be ordinary and genuine. This is conventional to the soul genre because the artist rawness is being portrayed and this makes the audience feel more relatable to the artist.

Overall, the artists image is connoted through the use of black through out the costumes. This is because the black represents negativity and sadness which is in content as to what the song is about, and is conventional to the soul genre. The artist being seen as ordinary and extraordinary is very effective because the audience can relate to the ordinary style of the artist. But can also look up to the extraordinary style of the artist as a role model figure that the audience can idolise. Therefore the artist image reflects the meanings and connotes what her music is about, which helps the audience to understand what the artist is all about and makes the artist conventional to the soul genre.

  1. You have provided a very basic analysis of your artist's representation, as you have briefly stated a couple of her outfits, and what some of the connotations behind each one is. You have attempted to link ideas back to the audience and genre, but they are very vague and lack description or insightful thoughts.

    You need to:
    1) Elaborate on the artist image and representation by thinking about connotations of the hair and make-up as well as the costumes
    2) Elaborate on how the audience might be able to build a relationship with/look up to the artist as a result of these choices
    3) Think about the hidden meanings and messages behind each idea
    4) Elaborate on how each idea is conventional or not of the genre, and how this will help appeal to the TA
    5) Conclusion needs to explain the importance and benefit of planning your artist's representation
