Cinematography

Cinematography is very important when planning because we need to make sure that we include a diversity of different conventional camera shots to the soul genre. We have to ensure that we use a range of different shots so that are soul music video is not boring and repetitive for the audience.

Firstly we have planned to use close up shots. We have decided to use these shots when our artist is playing the piano and walking through London on her own. We feel that these close ups will help the audience to be able to relate to the artist easier, because they can get a clearer understanding of the artist emotions and feelings. We also plan to use close ups when the artist is performing, this is so audience can build up a relationship with the artist by seeing deeper into her emotions this will lead to the artists performance being more effective in connecting with the audience.
A close up is conventional to the soul genre because it allows the audience to build up a relationship with the artist, close ups are conventional because within the soul genre it is stereotypical for the artist to be reflecting on their past. Therefore using a close up it allows the audience to build up an understanding of the artists past and how she is feeling now.

We also planned to use long shots on stage and In London. We thought that the use of a long shot on stage, would show that the artist is alone which is conventional to the soul genre, and is a typical representation in the soul genre and makes the audience feel symphay towards the artist. Overall making the artist more relatable. Also having a long shot in London also conveys the theme of disconnected to the rest of the world, and isolated. This is conventional to the soul genre as artists with in the genre are portrayed to be alone and disconnected to make the audience feel sorry for the artist.
Overall a longshot is conventional in the soul genre because it represents the artist as isolated which is a typical representation in the soul genre. The long shot allows the audience to understand how the artist is sick of the fame world and wants to live a normal life again.

We have also planned to use panning camera technique in order to show how our artist is multi talented. This shot will be used when the artist is playing the piano in the music room and singing at the same time. The audience will have more respect and liking towards the artist knowing that she is multi talented which will lead to the audience talking about the artist more, and creating publicity around the artist and overall increasing her popularity. We also feel that using panning will make the music video more effective as the audience will not get bored of the same camera angles and shots being used as we will be including a range of different types to keep it interested.
A panning shots allows the audience to get a wider understanding on the surroundings of the artist. This is conventional to the soul genre as a typical setting in the soul genre is usually sparse which connotes to the audience that the artist is lonely even though she has fame. Which then leads the audience to believe that the artist is depressed.

The group have also planned to use a high angle as it makes the artist look vulnerable which is conventional to the soul genre. This is conventional to the song because the lyrics display how the artist is worried and insecure, and by including a high angle shot it makes the music video easier to understand and relate to. Also having a high angle can show to the audience that the artist is normal and does not think she is better than everyone else. This is conventional as soul genre artist want to be displayed as normal as they can so they are relatable to the audience.
A high angle is key to incorporate in a soul genre as it represents the artist to be vulnerable. This held the audience understand how the artists feels within the fame world. Overall creating an effect on the audience where they will want to look further into the artist, leading to the audience building a relationship with the artist to find out more about why the feel depressed.

We will also use a point of view shot with in the music video in order to show the artist skills of playing the piano. We are planning to use the point of view shot when the artist is playing the piano. This represents the artist as being open about her thoughts and feelings. The audience can build up a relationship with the artist and make connections if they also play piano similar to the artist. Overall the point of view helps to show to the audience how the artist feels and displays her emotions.
A point of view shot enables the audience to put themselves in the artists shoes, and understand how life is in the fame world. The reason for the point of view being used in the piano scene, is to show that the artists is playing the piano to relieve stress and to do something she has enjoyed before she was famous. Overall the point of view shot displays the artists thought and feelings which the audience are able to understand and can therefore begin to build up a relationship as to why the artist is feeling down and stressed.

In conclusion the use of planning cinematography has highlighted how important it is to use a range of different camera angles, in order to make the music video entertaining and relatable for the target audience. Therefore if we did only use a couple of camera angles the video would be boring and unpopular. However planning cinematography helped our group to come up with ideas that are conventional to the soul genre, for example the high angle showing vulnerability. This specific example was planned in a group decision and we thought this would be conventional to the soul genre and help our audience to begin to understand the artists feelings, being depressed.

  1. This is a basic analysis of your chosen camera techniques, as you have briefly stated what you will use and when, with a short explanation as to why, You need to consider the artist's representation and relationship with the audience more.

    You need to:
    1) Elaborate on what each camera technique creates and why
    2) Explain how and why it is conventional (or not) of the genre
    3) Elaborate on the artist's representation and overall relationship with the audience as a result of each technique
    4) Include example of close up
    5) Elaborate on importance of planning camera in intro and conclusion

  2. You have elaborated slightly on the artist rep and how they can build a relationship with the TA as a result and have thought about how examples are conventional of the genre. however, you still need to elaborate more, making this a sound post
