uHow does the digipak promote the artist?

uHow does the digipak attract an audience?

A digipak contains higher quality images and meaning in them. They also usually contain a letter or note from the artist which is aimed directly at the fans, which gives a more personal feel towards the fans from the artist. Also a digipak can contain bonus tracks which the original cd may not include. A digipak has six sides which therefore gives the artist more areas to market themselves and include more information such as: lyrics. Overall a digipak makes it a collectable item for the fans and therefore increasing the demand for the digipak and increasing the publicity around Duffy.

In Duffy's digipak the artist is represented to be sad, upset and depressed through the facial expressions and body language. The artist is not facing or looking at the camera in both images of her which portrays her to be depressed and upset, the audience can get an understanding of this because by looking down and to the side, shows to the audience that the artist is not ready to face her problems yet. This is conventional to the soul genre because the soul genre music is stereotypically known for the music to be about sad previous experiences, which the audiences can relate to because they are likely to be on common grounds and therefore can build up a relationship with the artist, due to going through similar circumstances as the artist themselves.

Also the colour theme is black and white which is conventional to the soul genre, and frequently used within the soul genre. The colour theme of black and white represents reflecting on your past. By having this filter on the Digipak It shows to the audience that the artist is going to be reflecting on her past. Due to the the filter, the white is her face and hair and the rest is black. White connotes innocence and black connotes problems and depression. Therefore the artist is seen to be innocent surrounded by problems, which is leading the artist to be depressed and feel suffocated by the darkness surrounding her. This is conventional to the soul music genre, because the black and white filter is stereotypical used and effectively and helps to convey a theme and make the music video easier to understand for the audience.

The design and layout of the Digipak is a stereotypical layout with six sides, which allow more room for visible artwork, this sustains a better chance of attracting potential buyers, as they will see the digipak as not just a cd but more of a collectors item. The digipak includes high quality images and more in-depth meanings in them. It also contains a letter from the artist directly to the fans, in order to make it feel personal. Another aspects of the benefits of the digipak is that it usually contains an extra bonus track. Finally on the digipak all the information is very easily accessible, making it more appealing and long lasting.

The choice of images are conventional to the soul genre because the artist is on her own, isolated and close up. The use of a close up makes the image more relatable for the audience. This is because the audience have a clearer view of the artist emotions which allows the audience to have an understanding of how the artist is feeling, therefore allows the audience to build a relationship with the artist. In the close up where the artist is looking down portrays the theme of reflecting on her past, this is conventional to the soul genre because the artist is in black and white which also represents the past and reflecting. The soul genre is known for artist reflecting on previous times which makes this choice of images very effective and conventional to the soul genre.

The digipak style grew in popularity among the record labels and recording artists in 2000s. The digipak helps to promote the music genre as it is six sides which allows more room for the artist to display conventional themes that relate to the soul genre. In the digipak from Duffy, the soul genre is promoted through the themes of past, depression and innocence. This is shown through the colour theme and style of images shown. The soul genre is stereotypically seen to be sad and heartbreak style of music videos. This can be seen through the connotations of Duffys digipak which overall promotes the soul genre itself.

The digipak promotes the artist by displaying their range of songs, choice of images, the title of their name. The artist is promoted by being displayed on the front cover and their name being the largest font on the digipak cover. The name of the artist is in an unfamiliar font which portrays the artist as unique and different from the other artists in the music industry. Which positively promotes the artist to be interesting and conventional to the soul music genre. Another way the artist is promoted is through the CD itself having her name written on it the same way it is written on the front of the digipak. This acts as a reminder to the audience that the artist is unique and memorable.

The digipak attracts an audience attention by not just being a cd album but by being the digipak, which makes it more of a collectable item not just a CD. Another aspect of why Duffys digipak attracts the audiences attention is through the use of simplistic colours (black and white) which will make it stand out on the shelf. This is because most other artist use bright colours on their album covers, so by having simple black and white will be eye catching and engaging for a potential customer looking at the CD isle.

Overall from this digipak analysis I have learnt that the digipak makes the item not just a CD but collectable item, which means that it attracts a wider target audience. It also targeted at fans of the artist as well as the rest of the public. Also the conventional colours of the soul genre should be present on the digipak so that it can be easily identified by a soul genre fan. In conclusion I have learned the codes and conventions that are stereotypical in the soul genre. So I now have the knowledge to be able to adapt, follow or develop these conventions when I create my own digipak. I also have learned that a digipak can market and brand an artist as they are able to express themselves freely in the sixe sides provided. Which therefore engages the target audience to find out more about an artist, because they may be interested in why certain representations are being portrayed, for example depression.

  1. This post demonstrates some understanding of what a digipak is and the purpose it has. You have made a start in analysing the codes and conventions of a digipak and have considered the conventions of soul music, however, you need to elaborate on your points further, by considering the relationship that is created with an audience.

    Aim-
    1) Consider the relationship that is created with an audience in more detail
    2) Explore your conclusion points further, by explaining what your ideas and inspirations are for creating your own product

  2. This post now demonstrates some proficient understanding of what a digipak is and the various ways in which it appeals to an audience. You have elaborated on some of the conventions, but further discussion of the inspirations and ideas that you gained is needed, to demonstrate further planning techniques.
